The research center on modern and contemporary China

Founded in 1996, the China Centre, or CECMC, is a research centre under the tutelage of the National Centre for Scientific Research (le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS) and the School for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences  (l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Social, EHESS). Also known as the “China Centre”, its purpose is to elaborate research programmes on China, from the perspective of the social sciences, and to provide research training in the methods that are specific to the School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS). Ever careful to adhere to a strict interdisciplinary perspective, the CECMC programmes cover history, anthropology, economy, sociology, philosophy, political sciences and techniques. The CECMC’s own approach to China is based above all on primary sources and field work.  This approach can be described as the deployment of the social sciences from the contemporary scene to the furthest reaches of history, the two dimensions being complementary.
